Mik Artistik's Ego Trip are scheduled to play at least ten times during this year's festival and watching them play the Croissant Neuf Bandstand on Wednesday evening it's easy to see why they are so in demand by the stage bookers.
Alongside Mik are two excellent musicians, Jonny Flockton on guitar and Benson Walker on bass, and they provide an immediate comic contrast to Mik's slightly disorganised approach to stage craft.
The songs are usually about the mundane and many are just plain daft. But whether Mik is singing or talking about a girlfriend who looks like his mam, library etiquette, buying a cheap watch at the market, or pleading with his partner not to bring her son to the sculpture workshop ("He copies me”), every single one is a gem. Mik's improvisation between songs is inspired and even during the mid-set sound check he has people laughing out loud.
Halfway through the set there's a song about a garden ornament, which many artists might find a struggle to get the audience to engage with, but Mik's warmth has everyone on board and we're all shouting back "Plastic Fox” during the chorus.
One of my favourite songs is 'Jonny's had an offer from another f**king band' during which Mik advises his guitarist not to be seduced by the Pyramid Stage and proceeds to work his way through the line-up trying to find out who wants to poach him.
There's a lot of genre hopping, from punk to funk, and a mix of the upbeat and slow, but the band gel it all together into a very funny, quite surreal and wonderfully entertaining 45 minutes.
Setlist: Condoleezza Rice, Sculpture Workshop, Beer Festival, Jonny's had an offer from another f**king band, In the Library, Plastic Fox, Cancer, Adrianne O'Driscoll, She Looks Like Me Mam, Car That Makes a Bus Sound, Cheap Watch From The Market, Hippo in my Pocket
The band's video diary from Glastonbury Festival 2015 includes songs such as Condoleezza Rice, 44 Years to Live, Sweet Leaf of the North, Plastic Fox and Beer Festival. The gig reviewed above features in the video between 1.04 and 6.56.
